Natural Capital

A guide for institutional investors

This guide, produced by Kana Earth in collaboration with Aberdeen Investments, Gresham House, and Rebalance Earth, provides a structured framework for institutional investors allocating to, or considering allocations to, natural capital.

The group has come together with a shared goal: to advance natural capital as a practical investment theme. It sets out how to allocate to natural capital across private markets, including real estate, infrastructure, private equity, and alternatives, and explains how these strategies can deliver both financial returns and nature-positive outcomes.

Introduction

Natural capital: From a specialist focus to a strategic priority.

Natural capital is transitioning from an allocation among specialist pension funds, endowments and family offices to a core component of all institutional portfolios. Specialist investors have long valued the enduring attributes of land-based strategies. Farmland and forestry, in particular, have demonstrated decades of strong, stable performance, providing reliable income, inflation protection and portfolio diversification (please see in the portfolio benefits section).

Now, a new and complementary vertical is emerging: nature-based solutions. These strategies focus on restoring and enhancing ecosystems, deliver measurable outcomes such as carbon sequestration, water regulation and biodiversity recovery.

Like agriculture and forestry, nature-based solutions offer tangible assets underpinned by biological productivity and long-term land stewardship. Together, these three verticals now define the expanding investment universe of natural capital.

Amid intensifying climate risks and the graowing recognition of biodiversity loss, the role of ecosystems in maintaining economic stability is becoming increasingly clear. Nature is not a peripheral consideration; it underpins the productivity of the global economy. For investors, this shift represents a recalibration of value, risk and resilience. Land-based strategies that enhance natural capital can strengthen long-term portfolio outcomes while aligning with global sustainability goals.
